Kirra's 12 month check-up

We took Kirra in for her 12 month well baby visit and shots. She is trending in the same path in weight length and head size as her last few visits (since 6 mos old).

21 pounds 13oz (50th percentile)

31inches long (97th percentile)

47cm head circumference (95th percentile)

We talked to Dr Goldstein about how Kirra can now try drinking dairy milk or soy and which to one to give. We are going with organic cows whole milk at least until we see any issues with allergies.  Then try soy (with calcium and Vitamin D) as an alternative. She said at two yrs old we can switch To low fat milk. But she needs the fat now for growth and all the calcium for bones and teeth.

We also did a 12 month physical and blood draw for the UCSF TIPs study which we participated in since birth. As a recap this study is to test whether giving probiotics daily for 6 months with breastmilk might reduce her chance of having asthma. (We don't know if kirra is in the test or.control group).

The blood draw portion wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We went to UCSF children's Hospital and she was measured again. Then for.the blood draw I held her torso and left arm, and hugged her legs in between my legs. Her right Arm was stretched out as the nurse put a band around to help the vein be more visible. When they found her vein I turned kirras face and.blocked her from seeing what they were doing. She didn't even flinch when the needle went in. It was more the digging around for the blood to come through that kirra squirmed for. I sang her favorite Twinkle Twinkle Little star to distract her, and it worked. She didn't really even cry- nothing like when she got her shots at the Dr office.  Plus she was getting hot from me holding her. What else is a wiggle worm like kirra to do when held tight like that?

Afterwards the nurse gave kirra a small Teddy beat which kirra carried in her hand all the way to the car, and in the ride home. She was happy.

Kirra you are a trooper and I'm glad you aren't cranky or fussy. Its Like you know there are much more fun and exciting things and sights to explore and enjoy than to be bored and grumpy and whine. Good sport!
